Motorola Edge 40: Everything you need to know

Learn more about Motorola Edge 40: Everything you need to know below!

Motorola is one of the grand old names of smartphones, so it’s always interesting to see what it comes up with when new models are announced.

We were impressed by the Edge 30 series and with rumours beginning to appear regarding its successor, we gather together all the news and details we know so far about the Motorola Edge 40 series, also known as the Moto X40.

When will the Motorola Edge 40 series be released?

Motorola has confirmed that it will launch the X40 series in China some time in December, teasing the phone with a poster comparing it to an SUV on the basis of its IP68 water-resistance rating.

Since the X30 line eventually released in the West as the Edge 30 series, it stands to reason that the X40 phones will eventually be known to us as the Edge 40.

That still leaves the question of when these models will launch under the Edge 40 name, but it’s most likely to be at least a few months. The Motorola Edge 30 range had a staggered release, and it may be a case of more of the same with the next generation. Here’s when the Edge 30 models debuted:

  • Motorola Edge 30 Pro – March 2022
  • Motorola Edge 30 – May 2022
  • Motorola Edge 30 Ultra – September 2022
  • Motorola Edge 30 Neo – September 2022
  • Motorola Edge 30 Fusion – September 2022

As you can see, the 30 Pro was the first to launch, and we think it’s likely that we’ll see the same again next time around.

How much will the Motorola Edge 40 cost?

We’ve yet to see any details on pricing for the Motorola Edge 40 range. To give ourselves some idea though we can look back to the previous generation. Here’s how the models in that range lined up:

  • Motorola Edge 30 Neo – £349/€399 (approx. $415)
  • Motorola Edge 30 – $399/£379/€499
  • Motorola Edge 30 Pro – $699/€799 (approx. £589)
  • Motorola Edge 30 Ultra – £749/€899 (approx. $889)

Motorola didn’t release all models in all regions (hence the various approx. prices) and we suspect that it may be a similar story with the Motorola Edge 40 series.

What features will we see in the Motorola Edge 40 series?

So far, we only know a little about the Edge 40 line, though Motorola has begun to confirm some details.

The company has confirmed that the X40 – the model we expect to launch as the Edge 40 Pro elsewhere – will be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, and will feature IP68 water and dust-resistance.

A few more details can be gleaned from an FCC listing for the Edge 40 Pro, which shows a device that supports 125W fast wired charging, with support for wireless and reverse charging as well. There seem to be two variants, one that offers a single SIM and another that has both a physical SIM and eSIM.

The same phone has appeared on the Chinese certification site TENAA under the X40 name. In that listing there are images of the design, along with more details about the hardware inside, with the model sporting a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 along with a 6.67in OLED display that has curved edges and a 144Hz refresh rate.

You can get a better look at that design in these renders created by leaker OnLeaks and shared with MySmartPrice based on specs he’s found so far, which show a clearer look at the Pro phone’s likely design.

He adds that the phone will measure 161.3 x 73.9 x 8.6mm, and will feature a glass back along with a metal frame.

The rear camera array contains three units: a 50Mp main shooter, allied with a 50Mp wide and 12Mp telephoto sensor. RAM will apparently range from 8GB to 18GB, with storage from 128GB up to 512GB.

Interestingly, the listing has the device coming with a 5000mAh battery and 68W charging, which is less than the 125W fast charing on the FCC listing. Could this mean that these are two distinct devices, or will charging vary by market?

We’ll keep updating this article as more details become available, so until we know more be sure to take a look at our guide to the best smartphones currently available.
